BMW iPod adaptor

When I first heard about the iPod adaptor that you can get installed in a BMW, I was quite impressed. It is still cool, but...

From the BMW iPod Adapter FAQ, it seems you can only play one of five custom playlists (or your whole library). To me, the advantage of the iPod is that you can select what you want to hear based on how you feel at the time, rather than having to predict in advance and set up playlists.

It needs a "control via iPod" mode where someone sitting in the passenger seat can select something to play, which is then passed directly to the BMW. The cable in the glove box can be long enough to allow this, but short enough to prevent the driver controlling the iPod (safety consideration).
