How can I get a console-only version of Vim?

I've been a faithful vi user for years, but now would like to use a couple of features (well, one actually) that exist in vim but not vi. It seems vim is primarily desgined to be run with a GUI, but all I want is the console version. http://www.vim.org/download.php seems to assume that I want to use a GUI version. (I realise the full vim package can be used on the console, but I don't particularly want to install all of the dependencies.)

Hmm, maybe it's time to upgrade to MacOS X 10.3. The vim site says "On MacOS 10.3 the "vi" program is actually a console version of Vim 6.2."
