Can you really choose your friends?

They say "you can choose your friends, but not your family".

I'd like to posit that that's bullshit.

Well, it's half true. You don't have to be lumped with friends you don't like. But you can't necessarily choose that a particular person will be your friend and have it come true.

Sure, you can add them on a social networking site and get all excited if they add you back and leave a few comments, but fully-fledged friendships are part choice, part chance, and part reciprocity.

On a completely unrelated note: what sort of crackpot name is "Biz", anyway?
