Utopia Banished: wonderful, melodic AND pathetic...

I've just been listening to a fantastic album that I dislike. A musical wonder that draws me in, but makes me loath to enjoy it:

Utopia Banished: melodic death metal
Night of the Black Wyvern play hifi lofitrackslicensebuy

Melodic it is indeed; whilst high energy, it is almost classical. But... it's metal. Now don't get me wrong: I do like some metal. I just don't get what's so fantastic about the screaming/yelling vocals that can be heard from roughly half the metal bands out there. I don't see what it adds to the music. There is something in that tuneless "hear my strain my larynx" sound that makes me want to say "you talentless, pathetic little creature; if you can sing properly, why don't you do so and let us enjoy some real music?"

Of course, these artists aren't talentless or pathetic: this vocal style is simply the done thing. A style that no doubt appeals greatly to your more dedicated metal audience. It's just that I don't get it. Marco from Nightwish sings in a way that sounds like yelling, but is clearly still musical and rather intelligible. A high-energy sound that is a good release, but not... dumb. But then, I initially didn't realise Nightwish was a metal band: they sounded to good/mainstream for that.

Okay, that's enough of my silly little rant about metal vocals. Now I think I shall go and buy this album; it really is good... particularly the last track. ;-)
